Superfood Smoothies
Superfood smoothies are a great first meal of the day or even for dinner! They provide easily digestible nutrients and high quality fuel for the body and mind. As a nutritionist who constantly is speaking to people about diet, I have found that one of the easiest, healthiest, and tastiest ways to transform your current diet is to begin eating superfood smoothies for breakfast. Enjoy!
Superfood Berry Bliss
1. Hazelnut mylk - 1.5 cups2. Blueberries, strawberries, or blackberries - 2 cups 3. Raw Cacao nibs - 1 Tablespoon 4. Maca - 1 Teaspoon 5. Goji berries - 1/4 cup 6. Raw Honey - 1 Teaspoon Preparation Instructions: First make fresh hazelnut mylk by blending hazelnuts with water (1:3 ratio). Pour the mixture into a nut mylk bag and squeeze the liquid out. I like to make a quarts worth and then keep it in the fridge. It will keep for at least three days, or enough for three smoothies. Then pour the mylk into a blender. Next, grind the cacao nibs in a coffee grinder until they become a fine powder. Remember to only use the grinder for ingredients other than coffee, otherwise everything you add from the grinder will have a hint of coffee flavor (which of course many may enjoy). Now, place the cacao and all other ingredients into the blender and blend until smooth. Serve and feel the bliss! Nutritional and Health Benefits: Hazelnuts are rich in high quality protein. 1 cup of hazelnuts have about 17g of protein! Berries are naturally low-glycemic, which means that the sugars cause minor fluctuations in blood glucose and insulin levels and therefore are balancing for our system. Cacao nibs provide high levels of magnesium and antioxidants. Maca provides long term energy and high mineral content. Goji berries are rich in complete protein, iron, vitamin C, and are known as a longevity food. Lastly, honey aids in the digestive process.
Wild Green Herbal Revitalizer
1. Rooibus tea - 1.5 cups2. Green Apples - 2 3. Green Pear - 1 4. One handful of wild nettles and/or dandelion 5. Vitamineral Green - 1 Tablespoon 6. Agave syrup - 1 Tablespoon Preparation Instructions: First make a rooibus tea by steeping the herbs and water for ten minutes in almost boiling water. As above, try making a quart and keeping the extra in the fridge. It also will last three days. Next place the tea in a blender. Then core the apples and pear and add to tea base. Finally, add the remaining ingredients and blend until smooth. Serve and let the green vibrance revitalize you at every level! Note: Once wild nettles have been harvested (with gloves on!), properly dried, and then blended, the sting of the nettles is gone. Nutritional and Health Benefits: Rooibus tea is naturally caffeine free and yet energizing. It is also mineral rich and high in antioxidants, which neutralize free radicals (molecules that have lost an electron and are therefore unstable and damaging). Green apples, and apples in general, are high in Vitamin C and dietary fiber. Pears are an excellent source of the mineral potassium, which has been shown to help muscles and nerves work properly. Nettles and dandelion greens are high in major minerals such as calcium and both have liver tonifying properties. Vitamineral green is an amazing superfood powder that provides a full spectrum of vitamins, minerals, probiotics, and enzymes. It is also extremely alkalizing. Lastly, agave syrup is a natural low-glycemic sweetener that rounds out the flavor of this healing elixir.
